Barkeaters Restaurant - Shelburne, Vermont...Great Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Dining Experience

Barkeaters Restaurant, Vermont - positive gluten-free dining experience

This summer we ventured on a long trip visiting family on the east coast.  It was the first time we've traveled extensively as a gluten-free and now dairy-free family.  We are quite fortunate as our final destinations were loved ones who also lived a gluten-free lifestyle.  A few times we ate out at restaurants.  We had such a wonderful experience at one in particular, and I had to share.

Barkeaters Restaurant is located in a little town called Shelburne, Vermont where the grass is really greener.  We called ahead to see what their menu options would be for our gluten and dairy free clan ranging from ages 10 to 80.  Surprisingly, the staff person on the phone was knowledgeable, which gave me hope, and declared a variety of options.  When we arrived a few hours later, we were greeted with warm hospitality and assurance that our table would be a safe place.  The waitperson took our order as the chef discretely listened from behind the long and inviting bar.  At this point I was beginning to relax knowing that they were taking us seriously with our gluten and dairy restrictions.

We ordered two soups to start...

Sore Throats, Ear Infections, and Gluten

gluten symptoms - sore throat, ear infections

Julia Child was my idol.  I loved watching her on PBS, which was one of the few channels we received on our 9-inch black and white television.  Julia entertained me as I was recovering from chronic strep throat and ear infections.  I can still hear her lively voice as she whacked the rolling pin trying to flatten pastry dough.  With genuine personality she raised the pitch in her delivery and confidently moved through an unexpected situation:  “...and if the dough is too stiff, just bash it down with the rolling pin.”

Two points come to mind with that image.  First, I was comforted by Julia’s shows.  She made me forget how miserable I felt as a kid, sick with strep throat, ear infections, and congestion.  I had a running prescription of penicillin at the local drug store.

Keeping It Positive...Going Gluten-Free

going gluten-free & keeping it positive

I make a conscious effort to approach eating and cooking with a positive attitude.  In the beginning of our transition to eating gluten-free foods, I told my daughter she was my "taste tester" and that she didn't have to eat anything she wasn't keen on.  We both already felt restricted, so I wanted her to have some control over what she ate.  We had many failures and laughed as we threw them out over our shoulders.  My pastry education proves to be the backbone for our family, and the baking pans are in constant rotation...I wish we had air conditioning!

Gluten-Free Grocery Shopping...First Time

grocery shopping for gluten-free food

The night I was diagnosed, I had a terrible dream.  I was in the grocery store and all the lights went out leaving me with a streak of panic and irrational terror.  When I woke up, I thought the dream was pretty funny and right on target.  Here I was, a culinary graduate and a food professional, and I had no idea what to buy in the grocery store.

Making My Kitchen Gluten-Free

January 2, 2014 Katrina

Day 2 of my gluten intolerance diagnosis kicked me into high gear. I felt powerless, angry, and hungry. So, I decided to churn my confused emotions into productivity. The approach was to rid my kitchen of all gluten from wheat, barley, and rye.  I didn't want to be tempted by the tasty foods that were poisoning my body.  Hoping the "out of sight, out of mind" theory would ease the pain.
